Introduction to Trauma

Welcome to In Session! A new podcast brought to you by three professionals in the mental health field who want to normalize and de-stigmatize mental health while answering some questions you may have about accessing resources in your own community or on campus!

In this series, we aren't going to dive into specific traumatic experiences, but we will be talking about the impact of trauma, how it manifests for different people, and how counseling can be helpful in beginning to unpack personal trauma.

In this episode, we introduce the idea of collective versus individual trauma and how people may cope with a traumatic event.  What does it mean to be "triggered" by something?  How can we manage when this happens? Maisy, Jordan, & Shelby explore what trauma is, how it impacts the body and mind, and how it’s treated. The trio also discuss mass trauma, PTSD, and protective behaviours.

**This podcast will frequently mention difficult topics related to mental health challenges, including self harm, suicidality, trauma, etc. so please do what you need to do to take care of yourself.  If you find yourself experiencing difficult feelings or can relate to anything mentioned in this podcast, please access local mental health resources or contact the Maine Crisis Hotline at 1-888-568-1112 or the National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988.**
